I love the word Siesta.
I also love an afternoon nap.
It is something that I seriously crave some days.
Always around 3 - just after picking the kids up from school - I get really tired.
My body wants to rest and I can't.
I need to start the next shift of school snack, homework, after school activities and meal preparation if I have not already done it in the morning. I find if I sit down my body goes into sleep mode and I can't get up again for at least an hour. Over the years I have learnt to space out my day so that I can save some energy for this important time with the kids after school. It does not always work but most days I can get through it alright!
Afternoon sleeps/siesta's are wonderful it you can get them as a mother. It makes a big difference to my day if I can rest my mind and body. I am a happier mother, a more relaxed mother and I can think clearer. I also believe it applies to the children. If they have a siesta they are happier and more likely to follow instructions and have fun for the rest of the afternoon.
I now have no children left who have an afternoon sleep.
I sure miss it.
I am thankful for the weekends and my husband who sometimes helps me to have that all important Saturday Siesta when I need one!
I'm hearing you Naomi!
ReplyDeleteMy maternal grandparents were 'off the land' and after eating their main meal in the middle of the day would have an hour 'camp'. Grandpa lived to 101 and Grandma is still going strong at 101+.
So I adopted the same notion [who can argue with centenarians!] and have a Sophia [so named after Sophia Loren who would recline on her lounge after lunch] most days. There is much to be said for the energy-uplift and there is a lot of research going into this internationally to justify it...but really who needs justification when Sophia Loren is an advocate?!?

Wow! what wonderful grandparents you have - I am going to have to try harder to fit a siesta into my schedule - I want a long life too - plenty of time to spend with the grandkids! it sounds so romantic to recline on the lounge after lunch - love it! thanks for your thoughts...
ReplyDeleteI love naps! They are my favourite! Most of the time, I am happy that my little Chooch is happy to be in his own cot and sleeps well there...then there is that other part that secretly hopes one day he will want to come and snuggle in with me for a nap in the big bed!
ReplyDeleteIt's good that Matt helps out on the weekend when he can. My husband and I both crave a sleep in - he sleeps in Saturday mornings and I take Chooch up the other end of the house or out of the house and Sunday he does the same. They also have Daddy/son bath and bedtimes on the nights my husband is home (chef's aren't often home at bed time!). I think family time for ALL the family is so very important, and VERY special!
OK, essay over! Thanks again for this lovely post.

Oh gosh that is one cute kid! No wonder you call them cherubs :-). I know just what you mean about sitting down and not being able to get up again, maybe if you try a quick rest a little earlier in the day it won't be so bad?
ReplyDeletethanks for your comments ladies - actually this week I sat on my bed to help a child with homework and fell asleep. It seems to be with me if I stop I crash it - hopefully this will improve as the children get older :)
