Kleptomaniac - a recurrent urge to steal
{They often steal items of trivial value. People with this disorder generally steal objects of little or no significant value. Some Kleptomaniacs may not even be aware that they have committed the theft}
The longer I am a blogger the harder I find it is to come across original with my work. The more I read other blogs, the harder I find it is to stick to my own thoughts and to my own writing. I find myself often feeling like a Kleptomaniac with the blog posts that I write. They seem to be a combination of many other blogs post that I have seen around the blogosphere. This worries me.
This is why I have currently stopped reading a long list of blogs. A big change and a difficult choice. I now only read a small handful and mix it up every week. With so many blogs and so many writers I find it is a challenge to come up with original ideas for a blog post. As blogging is growing in leaps and bounds here in Australia it can often feel like just about every topic to do with motherhood, parenting or blogging has already been covered.
Now, I know we are all unique and have own on spin to put on topics and we each have our own voice but how often do you stop and think: 'That post reminds me of what .... just wrote.'
Let's say I decide to write a blog post about blogging. If I spend some time checking out some other blogs I will find that most of my thoughts are already covered. Some recent posts I found are:
Zoey wrote a post about Batch writing
Sarah wrote 9 effective habits for real girl bloggers
Kristin wrote about Is blogging becoming Un-fun?
Kevin wrote about Finding your niche
The temptation to take a small part of their thoughts and to expand on it for my own blog post, can in reality seem very small and insignificant in the scheme of things. However, I know that people are reading, people are watching and people are noticing that we may be very similar in our thoughts.
I don't mind if someone takes my thought or idea and expand's on it and links back to me. What I do mind is a straight copy and paste and a few changes of words to make it their own post. That is wrong!
I guess I am wondering:
Do you notice if blog posts are similar?
Where do you decide to draw the line?
How far is too far in copying a blog post?

Asking for permission to reprint something and crediting that person? That's okay.
ReplyDeleteThere's also nothing wrong with getting inspiration from another blogger and 'extending' the conversation I guess.
I've written a few posts that started with..."I just read this over at.... and it made me..."
Straight out plagiarism is a big no, no.
I think being inspired by other people's posts is just part of blogging. Just like being inspired is just part of... life. If you want to get really serious about, do we have any real, unique thoughts? There is usually SOMETHING to trigger those thoughts, whether it be our circumstances etc.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a problem thinking about something person A has written, mulling over it, seeing how it fits into my own life, and then blogging my thoughts on it. I like to do what Alex suggested though, and mention that "I've been reading this post by A, and thinking about it..." etc.
I also get funny about being a blogger and not being a loyal blog reader. Do I want people just reading my blog whenever, or do I want them to be interested enough in my life/what I write that they come back every day and check if I've written something new?
I do think it's important to cull down the blogs you read every now and again (I'm currently doing this), but to not have any regular blog reads would be uncomfortable for me!
Anyway, just some thoughts!! :-)
I suppose they are all authors and just like books I don't read the same author all the time. So when I stumble across a new blogger I love it. I scroll through my Google Reader of favourite blogs whenever I can as it feels like a little community. Though when it comes to content many of my posts are irregular and more about the issues I'm tossing about in my mind. It will be coincidence if someone else is also mulling it over - or it will be because they are at the same life stage/demographic. Can't believe someone would copy and paste - it seems to defeat the whole purpose of using a blog as a release and form of personal expression. Like anything in life though I guess people have their own hidden agenda's and want to pass inspiring content off as their own. I love being quoted or referred to in a blog though - that's why I link back to favourite bloggers in my posts if I need to. Thanks for getting me thinking.
ReplyDeleteFunny you mention this. I was thinking something very similar the other day.
ReplyDeleteI had written a blog post or two, and then when I went about reading other peoples blogs AFTERWARDS, I noticed that other (more established) BLoggers had written about similar topics.
Not wanting to be labelled a Copy Blogger with no original thoughts, I quickly deleted them. I'm not sure that's fair on me, as they actually were my own original posts, but how do I get around it?
And then being inspired by someone else's post and elaborating on it....that's another thing altogether!!
How does one blog originally, and not get labelled as copying when others just have a similar idea??
Blah!!!
xx
Plagiarising (or 'cutting & pasting) someone's work is wrong. Extending on someone else's thoughts I don't have a problem with.
ReplyDeleteIf there seems to be a similar 'topic of the moment' (so to speak), it would make sense to assume that it's something that a lot of people are dealing/struggling with. I maintain that we can't reinvent the wheel - but the way in which we write something, may speak volumes louder than the same topic written differently by someone else. We're all unique and have our own point of view to offer.
I've often had a post in drafts, only to read another blog that has posted a similar thing! I've usually hit publish, because chances are, not everyone reads all the same blogs.
It's funny you mention it, because the post of mine you linked to was inspired by another blog post I read (Holly's). I think, like Talia said, that is just part of blogging. I figure if I'm just speaking authentically about what I feel, then it doesn't matter if someone else has already said it. Then again, my blog tends to be very personal in nature. I suppose if you have more of a niche blog, it becomes a bigger issue. You want to provide original content.
ReplyDeleteI think expressing a similar opinion is very different from copying content, which is never okay. Thanks for including my link!
Sometimes I feel like there just isn't any originality left in the world!
ReplyDeleteBut, I do agree. It's easy to feel like you are copying, when you were probably just influenced. But when influence really does turn into straight across plagiarism, that's an issue. Fine line.
The problem with not reading very many blogs (for me), is that I find myself not being nearly as inspired in my own writing. I haven't been blogging much lately because I simply haven't had the time to read other blogs much. It's an interesting side effect, for sure. :)
thanks for linking to me
ReplyDeletefirst of all I think being inspired is different to copying
the post you linked to of mine was inspired by professional bloggers who blog about using their blog to make money...my spin on it is for girls blogging which isn't always about being famous/money/blog power etc...so in that way being inspired and putting your idea on it is great
on the other hand I have been horribly copied more than once and I know quite a few other established bloggers have too..I had someone steal my ideas, write their posts in the same 'voice' as me, plagiarise my words and copy the style of my header and then try to promote it on my blog ...that is so different
...then there are the people that use original content (like bloggers pictures) and use it to illustrate their point without credit (I get that all the time)
bottom line is though if you put it out there all this stuff will happen...
I don't think you should worry about expanding on other bloggers ideas and getting inspiration...for me that's sorta the point and makes the blogging world go round...
Sarah
I think as long you acknowledge who or what inspired your post, then it is all good.
ReplyDeleteObviously straight out copying is a no, no - but what each blogger brings to the table is their own unique take on a subject. And I actually love reading several bloggers' takes on the same topic :)
As a relative newbie to the blogging circuit, I couldn't believe that people would just cut and paste straight from another source. Surely the point of blogging is to give voice to your own thoughts etc.
ReplyDeleteI do accept though that people get ideas from each other, and this is fine if they credit the blogger where the idea came from!
I also know that similar ideas tend to go around. With Christmas coming up I expect to see lots of posts about peoples ideas and plans. Lets face it there are only so many original ideas about Christmas. What is original though is your "writing voice". I think it is obvious when something is not written in your voice.
As a very new blogger I am constantly afraid of this. I dot want to be called a copy cat or cheat & have my reputation effected.
ReplyDeleteI like Kirst above have recently had to delete a number of posts prior to publishing them- just because a well established writer had written on the same topic - one time I noticed it after I had hit publish, but I was so afraid that I actually deleted the post anyway. Youre right the topics that we cover are often the same. The perspective may be very different - you as mother of 7 children would have a different view than me as a first time mum.
So I guess I'm trying to say that we all have similar source material & it is how we make that material into a unique post that makes us good writers.
This is a fantastic post that has given me food for thought!

Wow! thanks for all the comments ladies. I did not know this was such a popular topic with other bloggers. Lovely to see that some of you have the same fears and worries that I do and that you are mindful of keeping to your own writing voice. N x
ReplyDeleteI don't believe in copying someone's work and just rejigging it.
ReplyDeleteI do find it frustrating when I have been working on a post for a week (or planned it far in advance) and then see another blogger post on the same topic the day I am about to post. I have hesitated -afraid it seems I am copying, but gone ahead because I write from a totally different perspective and writing style at least.
i do think it is fine for many people to write on the same subject and even cover similar ground as long as you are using your own ideas and thoughts and adding to the discussion (rather than rehashing the same idea)
Just like Alex at WHOA MUMMA, if I am writing after seeing something on someone else's blog, I will always say so & provide the link back to their page. Copying some one else's work is not on.
ReplyDeleteIt seems pretty unanimous - plagiarism out, referencing an inspiring post is ok. I agree.
ReplyDeleteI find I get inspiration from reading other blogs, as well as real life experiences, music, images, etc. Sometimes in reading blogs, I find themes that resonate with me and I feel I want to say something in response giving my take on the topic, and usually referencing the other post/s.
There is, in fact, a post I had written a little while ago waiting for the right time to publish and then you wrote something along a similar line - Lonely Mother. I've sat on it since with a reference added at the end of my post to your post. I haven't deleted it and it's not the same as yours but some may see the common theme. I guess that brings me to a new related question.
Should we always let another blogger know if we intend to reference them? Is it polite or etiquette to ask permission? Do bloggers like to vet who references them? Or do blogger's generally treat this as "free publicity"?
I love it when someone is inspired enough by my blog posts to write something about the subject themselves. All I ask for is that I be given credit for that inspiration. Otherwise, it feels like stealing. Yes, the content may be different, but the idea is the same.
ReplyDeleteA lot of the time this can be pure coincidence and that's fine, but there have been a few times when a blogger has actually told me that they were inspired to write a particular post because of something I'd written. I love that! I really do. But, please acknowledge me as your muse!
I know try to do it where I can.
First, thanks to linking to me. I do appreciate the link love.
ReplyDeleteAcknowledgement is always nice.
Over ten years ago, when I first decided I wanted to be a writer, a professional writer told me; "you can copyright your work, but you can't copyright your ideas. There's 10,000 people writing your idea right now, who's going to be first to get it out there? You can copyright the arrangement of the words and that is all you can do."
Plagiarism is very real and problematic in the writing world. A lot of people can have the same idea, however, they all should have different voices if done correctly.
I've been inspired by posts that I have read, and have gone on to write a post of my own about it. Always giving credit where credit is due.
Bottom line is; plagiarism is very uncool.
Sometimes as I fall asleep I have an awesome idea for a blog, get up in the morning and someone has written what I was thinking about. I think many of us have very similar thoughts, hence the great blogging community.
ReplyDeleteI have seen my work verbatim on other sites and my actual quotes and have emailed very nicely and asked to be referenced or asked for it to be removed.
I link back and ask the blogger if its ok.

A lot of aspects to think about in this post, many of the other commenters have expressed what I think about some of this.
ReplyDeleteThough I do have just this one thought to add, if its an idea that is being discussed and written about in many circles, even if I do have some strong thoughts on it I often feel what is the point of adding my voice to the already loud chorus? So I don't post, even if I had been planning to on the topic for a while
